I think that's why Richard was angry Locke chose the knife ... but we all knew he'd choose the knife. But, Richard wanted him to choose the book. The reincarnated Jacob would recognize his own stuff from his previos life/lives

A agree that taking the knife was more of a bad sign due to it being a tool for death. They want someone that is passive agressive, and chosing the knife falls ont he wrong side of that. As for Ben I wonder what his new "scheme" is? You know that he's not going to willingly give up his leadership. He's already tried to kill Locke. I think now that he's playing the waiting game to see if Locke actually messes thing up himself.

if we go back to the man of science/ man of faith kind of thinking.... as a man of faith, is there a need for knife (a form of protection, a weapon )? faith would say that what i need will be provided for me... as a man of science i would want a knife (form of protection) to make sure that what i need, i get...and relate this then to fate vs. free will.... (it will be because it is willed to be vs let me do it myself) locke has forever struggled with this.. don't tell me what i can't do...
