Jericho: the CBS LOST (Wednesdays)

Someone described the new CBS series Jericho this way:

"In Lost, the people don't know where they are. In Jericho, the people know where they are, but don't know where everyone else is".

I think this show has potential. Snootch,  I read in the Ladies Night Out that you watched it as well. And GrayLensman also watched it. On ABC there's a huge thread already trying to figure out where in Kansas these people really are.

(More Wizard of Oz type stuff: Oh, Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore).

I put this here in a separate thread (not TV) as a compare and contrast type thing . . . because I really think that CBS is trying to do something similar to LOST.

And success just means more for us to watch . . . and dissect . . . and obsess over . . . and love.

RE: Jericho: the CBS LOST

I always like to start with the meanings of names:

• Jericho (Num 22:1)
City near the Jordan.
Two possibilities:
1) From (yareah 913a) meaning moon as time indicator; month.
2) From (riah 2131) meaning smell, scent, accept.
Jones is in favor of (1) calling it the City Of The Moon. NOBSE likes (2) and reads Place Of Fragrance.

And than some brief history:

Jericho is one of the most ancient human habitations. The most ancient human remains were found in it, some of which go back to 5000 years B.C. Others believe that these remains go back to 7000 years B.C. The most recent opinion on this subject is that they date back to 8000 years B.C.

The site of ancient Jericho is half a kilometre away from modern Jericho at a depth of 820 feet ( 250 metres) below sea level. It lies at latitude 31 52 degrees north and longitude 35 39 degrees east.

The evidence indicating that it is one of the most ancient cities in the world is borne up by a series of excavations made at " Tall as-Sultan ", which is oval in shape, formed by the successive accumulation of ruins with the passing of time. Excavations have been continuing successively since the middle of the nineteenth century up till now.

And you can have back to back out of the ordinary mystery shows: Jericho on CBS at 8 and Lost on ABC at 9.

But I am wondering how Jericho can keep this going when/if they get to, oh, season 3? The fate of the world is going to be an unknown for that long?

Good Morning, Gray.

Even as I was researching the history of the Biblical name, I wondered that too. Then I found that quote that said "Jericho may be the oldest city in the world."

What if, in the long run, Jericho DOES become civilization anew. Maybe God does a do-over. Humanity starts over . . . and gets it right this time.

I think writers/directors/producers always have the long view on shows . . . a goal for which they aim, an end result . . . and just take their time getting there.

Not all the time. Presented for your consideration; "Twin Peaks"

Oh, of course shows make it up as they go along.

Twin Peaks long-range goal was to be quirky, weird, indecipherable, unexplainable, mysterious. Goal accomplished.

jericho... interesting show.... some LOST comparisons...

dads...mayor is almost like chief of sugery... sons seeking father's approval ...
learning to work together to survive
escaped prisoners as bad guys... others are...???
rain is deadly
traingle perhaps but on jericho 2 females, one male???
two opposing thoughts on survival

this should be a good one to follow.... see where the human drama will lead and whether or not they will revert to 'the wild...'....

You certainly did! I couldn't find you anywhere last night!!! LOL!

I really liked the second episode . . . not because of its mystery and myth and intelligence like Lost.

I like it because it could really happen. Dust off all those old "How to Survive a Nuke" manuals. No food drive-thru's. No entertainment like (this) computer.

Me? I'm back in the '50's.

I'm planning on watching it on the CPU here today sometime to see if the story progresses in a way that'll keep me.

Well, as we found out this week, there were far more strikes than either Iran or North Korea could make happen since neither has any nuclear weapons at the moment or, if they did as we maybe believe N. Korea might, they do not have the capability of delivering them.

But then who did? Coordinated attack by terrorists seems to stretch credulity. But that is probably one of the big mysteries going forward. And if it was Iran or N. Korea than they are now smoking ruins as well once the nuclear armed submarines come up. But that's a whole other story (or season).

Weren't you saying to yourself, "Please, don't pick up another pin"?

By the way, in the world of Jericho I am most likely dead or dying already.

Anyway, if anyone cares I am far more interested in common folks in a horrible situation than people with superpowers where I can't buy how they acquired them. But don't mind me though, in the Invasion/Surface/Threshold race I was with Threshold. Which got canceled first. I still don't understand how someone could not love the first show to have a dwarf as a regular character!

Hey Gray... I didn't see much of the 3 shows, but Threshold did have a little something more to it that attracted me also. I only got to see bits and peices after the first couple epi's of it, but of the parts I did see of all 3 I would have gone that route also. And hey.. A dwarf in a major role I thought was great.

Mr. Snootch.....I think I love you! Finally, someone who liked Threshold as well. I thought I was the only one in the face of all those Invasion and Surface lovers!

And think about all the people you know or hear about who are dependent on this drug or that medical device or that procedure. Pfizer didn't have a plant in this town, did it?

That is a very compassionate thought, Gray. It is a very board, expansive way of viewing this situation, because people will need more than just food, clothing and shelter.

I, BTW, made one of those kits just last year that the Department of Homeland Security recommends, with plastic for windows, flashlights & batteries, water, etc.

Anybody else have the recommended supplies?

They also need to start thinking that nothing is going to be replaced. Burn 5 candles in the basement? Ya only need one and the rest are being wasted.

When I was a kid I read a lot of end-of-the-world books. And of course when you think about that scenario you are always one of the survivors. But how long do you last if your glasses break, you get a toothache, you get the flu really bad? Most of us couldn't even get enough to eat once the looting of the grocery stores and abandoned houses was done.

Just thought of this: Jericho did not show New York getting a pin. Heroes decided to show a painting of New York with a mushroom cloud rising above it. Gotta tell ya that I found the painting to be a little uncomfortable.  I think the Jericho folks might have thought it better not  to give NY a pin.

You mean you can downlod the show and don't have to watch it streaming? I still don't have a large enough bandwidth to do streaming video - well, I can do You Tube, but not the tv reruns on the websites - odd

dan i think you wil like this show.. but i wonder, with a topic like this for a show, what does it say about the state of affairs in the world today??? are we back to being suspicious and non-trusting of each other? ready to protect ourselves before trying to uncover the mysteries of life???

much more to this than what is on the surface...

True peace-lovers like myself don't want to ever see it come to this. More and more there are fringe elements that don't seek peace . . . and we should always work for peace.
