Why do they have to turn every great book into a movie? 90% of the time, only the book is able to capture the original magic of the story, and the movie ends up making it a temporary phenomenon, and undermines the true greatness of the novel. I would love for more people to encounter the stories I've read, but why does it have to be in a cut-out, shortened big-screen version?
Here are some of my favorite books that have been turned into movies: Ella Enchanted (it was my favorite book for 6 years, movie was a joke), The Kite Runner, Hoot, Speak (although the movie wasn't terrible), The Time Traveller's Wife, The Travelling Pants, Nancy Drew, Beowulf, The Golden Compass, and now even my favorite book, The Secret Lives of Bees. The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are my two exceptions; they turned into great movies.
You've got great books and you've got great movies. Some adaptations are good, and some are entirely different, but still good. Some movies are just horrible whether from a book or not. I enjoyed both the James Herriot books and the series. Same with Little House.
The way i look at it is like much like Des... there are some good Adaptattions, some bad, some terrible and some that are better than the books!!!
The Bourne Trilogy is a good case of the Movies being 10 times what the books are for me
Lord of the Rings is to Movies what the book is to books, its brilliant on a level not seen before or since!!!
The Potter movies have their moments, in terms of visually seeing the world of Magic brought to life its brilliant... they bring some characters to life as if lifted straight from the books(Luna, Umbridge, Hagrid)..... but on whole i don't rate them all that highly in terms of bringing a piece of great story telling to the big screen!!!
Honestly Innocent, what a movie does or doesn't do shouldn't affect your love of a book!!! There are plenty of books out there that i've loved and yet on the big screen its been horrible... thats life!!! Its a different form of media, set for a different set of people... and usually when on the big screen, made for what they think will put bums on seats!!!
Dan- it doesn't affect my love of a book! I will love all the books I've thought were good regardless of whether they were turned into consumer-oriented movies or not. I was just complaining right after I found out The Secret Lives of Bees was going to be turned into a movie. I understand that most people would rather watch a cut-down, shortened version of stories. I just sometimes wish more people would read the books before they became movies.
I read The Secret Lives of Bees when it first came out. It was very good. I'd read Sue Monk Kidd in Guideposts years before and had wondered what she'd been doing.
I've never read the books, but did you see who is playing Edward? The guy that played Cedric Diggory in the fourth Harry Potter film. (Talk about a good-looking guy.)

i saw that, it is hard to picture anyone as Edward though, he is just too perfect

I can't picture any one in my mind, but I do believe he is the most perfect man in the universe... to bad he doesn't exist
I enjoy these books, i'm not gonna lie and say that i loved them, or that they were my favs of all time, but they def have a place!! I do find it alittle 'girly' at times, if that makes sense... but as a whole i find them enjoyable and fairly 'believeable'!!
