I think they finally will be able to get a handle on the fires today...
"The fierce Santa Ana winds that have fanned wildfires throughout San Diego County since Sunday calmed noticeably Tuesday morning, allowing aircraft to attack the flames and firefighters to light backfires. Six air tankers took off from the Ramona airport shortly before 8 a.m. Those planes spent the morning attacking the western front of the Witch Creek Fire."
Unfortunately, they don't have it in control yet but they were able to do a little more today because the winds weren't as intense. There's still a long way to go yet. There were some evacuees that were allowed back to their homes while other people were being evacuated from other areas.
Here is a picture someone took from a hill that overlooks where I live. This is why I couldn't sleep Monday night/Tuesday morning...
That's looking east and the fire was heading west but then it shifted south. So we are still out of danger at the moment.
I just found out that they are finally allowing military helicopters to start helping fight the fires starting this morning sometime.
Scary stuff... from one wildfire country to another, i understand the fear and loss of whats going on and my thoughts are with everyone who's affected!!!!
The 3 major fires are at 10%-20% containment now. Bush and Schwarzenegger are in town assessing the damage. A lot of people who were evacuated are able to go home. The friends who I hang out with the most were able to go back home. However there are still more people being evacuated and still tons remaining evacuated.
I am just so happy to see all the outpouring of aid and love that's been going on. There are so many evacuation sites with so many volunteers helping everyone in need. People have even been opening their homes to strangers to provide shelter. Even from other states! There have been tons of donations, both monetary and material. If people had a need and they asked for it, they got more than what they asked for. People just come together. I'm trying not to get hurt by the mean things some people have been saying because those people are small and insignificant and there are so many more people who are loving and compassionate. It's just really been a blessing to see all the love!
Well, there are still 4 active fires right now. They've got them a little more under control but still not completely.
The Harris fire which was near me is still burning to the southeast in an area where I know a lot of people. The fire has now burned more than 84,000 acres and is only 20 percent contained. I ran into someone I know at Costco today who is not sure if his house is still there or not. He knows a lot of his property has burned though. His neighbors houses have all burned and there were a few others who I know who lost their houses as well. There were 100 houses in that community that burned down.
There are also a few major fires in the northern part of S.D. county that they are still battling. All in all it has been about 350,000 acres that have burned and about 1700 structures. Not sure how many of those are homes and how many are businesses.
So things aren't as intense right now and I guess it's slowly getting back to normal. I think I'll feel better when I see my friends tomorrow and my family next week.
