I cried, "Oh, Lady Midnight, I fear that you grow old, the stars eat your body and the wind makes you cold." "If we cry now," she said, "it will just be ignored."

It's a sad day but not. I know you guys all know by now that I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In my church we believe that God has once again called a prophet to this earth to lead His people. Our current prophet, President Gordon B. Hinckley, passed away this evening. It's sad because for me anyways he's the only prophet I can remember. He was called and sustained to the office of president of my church when I was 10. It's been 13 years of having him as our prophet and leader for me and it's going to be weird to not have him around anymore. It's not sad though because of the beliefs we as members of this church hold. One that families are together forever and that he is with his wife in the eternities and dwelling on the right hand of God. Two that he led a good life and that he was needed in the heavens to continue on with a greater work than that which he could perform while yet living on this earth. In this church death isn't the tragic and sad thing that it is in other religions. I'm not trying to put down other religion's and their beliefs in an afterlife or no afterlife, it's just that the beliefs we hold to in the LDS church temper the sadness felt when someone passes on because we know and believe that we will see them again.

What's likely to happen is that his body will lie in state for a couple of days prior to his funeral, which will probably be on Friday or Saturday and that will shut down the entire state. The American flag and the Utah flag are both going to fly at half staff until sunset the day President Hinckley is buried. As for who will lead our church next it's more than likely going to be Thomas S. Monson, who served as first counselor under President Hinckley (similar to vice-president of the U.S.). What happens is that now the quorum of the twelve apostles are now in charge of the church and they will work with President Hinckley's family to arrange the funeral. Then Elder Monson will be called and sustained as prophet and president of the LDS church, he will call his two counselors who will serve with him in the first presidency and then other positions will be filled as needed in the coming months. The LDS church isn't near as heavy on the ritual ceremonies as the Catholic or some other churches are.
