I drained the glass of water, refilled it, and made my way to the front porch. It looked towards the west, and I caught sight of a sliver of liquid gold before the sun completely disappeared behind the horizon, leaving a brilliant canvas of pink, yellow, orange, and red painted across the sky. I found myself strangely nervous, as if some part of me was dreading the coming darkness.

I don't think I've tried the black-eyed or butterbeans.
Well, when I was a kid, my grandmother would take us out to the country to relatives who had big big big gardens and we'd [ick butter beans and black-eyed peas and sometimes bring home a watermelon or two. Snap beans and some other veggies. We'd sit in the livingroom by the tv with a bucket at our side and one in our lap and we'd shell the black-eyed peas. I never liked them so it was really funny when she'd tell us if we didn't shell them we didn't eat them. I just shelled them to see how many I could shell and to watch my fingers turn purple.

All of them are good. I'd just leave out the horizon part since you already talked about that in the beginning of the chapter. Unless you leave this and change the first mention ...
Artichokes make me ill. Bleh ... I've tried them hidden in dishes and I know they're there and I can taste them. I love Spinach, but can't eat spinach dip if it has artichoke.
That's like peas for me...
i love peas! we had them last night with steak and cous cous
Wow, you guys are eating nice dinners!

I cried, "Oh, Lady Midnight, I fear that you grow old, the stars eat your body and the wind makes you cold." "If we cry now," she said, "it will just be ignored."
