Now after posting some of what I'll be staring with in the Epi 3 thread i decided to go with this to see what ideas anyone else has on this.
i've been saying for ages that it looked to me that jack, Kate, and Sawyer were actually not to surprised that they were caught. It was almost as if they planned it. The Looks at the end of the finale for season 2 made me think that it's very possible that Sayid and Jack having thought that Michael had been comprimised may have devised a way to take adavantage of the situation. They may have taken a page out of the OTHERS playbook so to speak. they decided to go along with Michael. knowing that something was up. Now with that being the case I don't think that Kate and Sawyer or Hurley were in on the ida at first. It may have been the plan to only include them on a nedd to know basis, and at first they didn't need to know. Then after the outing of Michael to the rest of the group by jack they all then knew about what Michael was doing. So at that point Jack included the rest of them on the plan that had been devised. They were going to allow themselves to get caught. Now I think Jack was figuring that it would happen closer to the OTHERS camp (fake one that Michael haqd been at) and not being busted out in the place they were. The plan would have included Sayid and Jin (another need to know) would not only hwlp "Rescue" the group, but take a hostage at the same time. Myabe even looking for Ben/henry for that purpose. They know now (during the final couple episodes) that there is something going on with them, and that Ben may be a key part of it all.
so in regards to knowing they want to get caught they start to realize that they need to improvise when they aren't taken to the place where Sayid and Jin are taken to. They luck out that Hurley is let go because he'll be able to relay the info about what happened to the rest of the losties, and get the help together that they would need for something bigger. With the change from the original plan now in effect I think they all have realized that htis is a chance to get more info on them than they may have from captuing one of them. So jack being the one to be dealing with Ben is now playing the same game with him that Ben did with the losties when he was captured (I still think that was planned). Jack will get in with them and learn what he can. This will be tough because it's ovbvious that the others know enough about them all that they will be able to hit every nerve that any of them have.
As for the Kate and Sawyer situation I'll post some of what I thought about this (I posted it in the Skate thread while talking to Fricks) soon.

jack did seem to learn something from ben during his capture... and sayid, in his glory, was not to be outdone in regards to the balloon... sayid may have had a great part in concocting this plan.... with some twists from jack and sawyer... where do we go from here??
My only objection is, I don't think they're looking to capture an other. UNless that's the plan Sayid was carrying out. But geez, he said he was going to capture two of them and kill the rest. Why kill the rest? Kill them if they're still fighting with you, but let them go if they retreat. That's kinda relentless. maybe he's sucked into his military junk again. That's what they would do in the Iraqi military I think.

killing the rest was somewhat of a shock... and he said it with such lack of emotion.... the purpose of going to the others was to get walt back... now it changes to getting their leaders back... is this the definition of war???
In thought about Sayid and his comment about killing the rest. I truely believe that this is something that kept him off the list that Michael had. His military BG always seems to rear up at some point, and always seems to be back into the hardcore mold. Like this issue, and before when he was talking (beating the crap out of ) Ben in the hatch, and then his torture of Sawyer. I think he has actually been trained to the point where he just flips the switch, and his emotions fall away, and he does whaat needs to be done. He knows the difference, but also knows that he's a worse person for doing the things he's done. That is why he was ashamed about the Sawyer incedent. Now I thkn since the death of Shannon he feels that the OTHERS are the enemy, and his skills are better at that level than in chill mode. Also he wants someone to pay for her death, and he's realized that she wouldn't have been shot had it not been for the OTHERS and the things they ahd done to them and the taillies.
